Joint Efforts to Advance Carbon Emission Reduction in Egypt

5/1/2025

On 1st May 2025, as part of the ongoing collaboration work between the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Environment, Eng. Karim Badawi and Dr. Yasmine Fouad held a joint meeting at the Ministry's premises to review and discuss the national carbon capture and storage (CCS) development in Egypt.

The meeting, attended by senior officials from both ministries and representatives of the Climate Finance Systems Transformation Project, focused on the role of CCS technologies in reducing emissions and contributing to the goals of Egypt's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the National Climate Change Strategy 2050.

Minister Badawi emphasized that carbon emission reduction is essential for enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian industrial products in global markets—particularly in Europe, with the upcoming implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). He highlighted the crucial need for a comprehensive technical and economic roadmap to support effective CCS deployment.

Minister Fouad noted that CCS is one of the climate projects referenced in the NDCs and was spotlighted during COP28. She stressed the importance of environmental impact assessments and awareness campaigns to ensure community engagement and alignment with international best practices.

A detailed presentation of the study, prepared under the Ministry of Environment's Climate Finance Transformation Project, was delivered by Dr. Rehab El-Maghraby of Suez University. The study reviewed global CCS projects, outlined implementation mechanisms, and assessed potential environmental risks and suitable mitigation measures.

This meeting marks another step forward in integrated climate action, reinforcing Egypt's commitment to sustainable development and global climate goals.
